Uplifting Updates from Tanzania

From our original cohort of 35 girls, we are currently supporting 26. Nine have recently completed their post-secondary education. Six have jobs – working as teachers with young learners! Sada and Sesilia are looking for teaching jobs, and Safi chose to focus on marriage and family for now. Last year was difficult for all of these young women due to Covid-19 and school closures, but thankfully, most of them were able to return to their gainful employment.

Edasta -- The First Girls Ed University Student!

One of our greatest highlights for 2020 is that we are celebrating the first university student from among our scholarship recipients! Edasta completed high school this year. She performed well on her national exams and applied to two university programs. She was accepted and reported to university in November 2020!

And They're Off to High School

We are thrilled about the size of our newest cohort of high school students. It is the largest group of young women supported by Girls Ed to pass national exams and qualify for entrance into Form 6. Thank you so much for your support in making it possible for them to pursue post-secondary education!

Peanuts vs. Exams - Small Acts of Resistance

Peanut harvesting takes time of three months (October, November and December), during which girls education efforts suffer as they can't attend the classes. Due to girls "small" and "thin" fingers, it is preferred that the girls perform the task of searching for peanuts by digging the soil instead of boys and adults.

Hongera Sana (Congratulations!) to our Students!

Spring is a time of new birth, new beginnings, fresh starts and that's exactly what many of our students are looking forward to right now. As you know, all of our Form 4 students sat for their national examinations in October. In February we got the results of their exams and found out which of them qualified to go on to high school and which would have the chance to pursue further education through the Vocation and Education Training Authority (VETA). Before the big reveal, let's take a moment to remember our journey thus far.
